Annual Golf Tournament A Success!

The Annual Stephen J. Robillard Charity Golf Tournament was held at Eagles Pointe on Saturday, September 20, 2025. We are most thankful to the 76 community businesses who donated toward our raffle and silent auction prizes as well as the 54 T-sign sponsors to help us with reaching our fundraising goals. We are thankful to each of the 74 golfers who joined us on a beautiful sunny fall day! And, our sincere thanks to all of our volunteers who worked diligently with planning the event as well as worked at the event.

ALA Awards Boys/Girls Club 2025 Person of the Year and Hosts Instructional Class

On Thursday, June 12, the Bluffton American Legion Auxiliary 205 held a ceremony at the Bluffton Boys /Girls Club to honor Lily Jackson as the Person of the Year. The award was presented by member Holly Sherburne. Lily was selected for the award because of her commitment to numerous hours of community service and for her willingness to always be available to assist others when needed. 

Prior to the award ceremony, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 205 hosted an American Flag instructional class at the Bluffton Boys/Girls Club. Isabella Murphy, a member of the JROTC at May River High School was the moderator. In her presentation to students in Grades 3 through 5, Isabella explained the meaning of the flag, the correct way to fold a flag as well held a question and answer session. Each attendee received a small American flag.

Four Chaplains Ceremony 2025

On Monday, February 3, the American Legion Post hosted its annual tribute to the Four Chaplains and the crew of the Army transport Dorchester carrying 902 officers and enlisted men, Navy armed guard, merchant seamen and civilian workers in the North Atlantic was struck by an enemy torpedo. Adjutant Michael Miranda opened the ceremony which included keynote speaker Rabbi Mendel Herts, Post 205 Chaplain Courtney Peoples who led the invocation and benediction, Post member James Gilliard who sang the National Anthem and on behalf of Mayor Larry Toomer, pro tem Mayor Tim Woods who shared a few words about the significance of the ceremony.

The Story: As Dorchester took on water, four Army chaplains – Lt. George L. Fox (Methodist), Lt. Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lt. John P. Washington (Roman Catholic), and Lt. Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed) – calmed frightened soldiers, aided the wounded and guided the disoriented toward safety. When there were no more life jackets available, the chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four young men. As the ship went down, men in rafts saw the four chaplains, arms linked and braced against the slanting deck, singing hymns and praying. A special Medal for Heroism, was awarded by President Eisenhower in 1961.

Making A Difference: Boys and Girls Club Literacy Program

Member Holly Sherburne received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Boys and Girls Club Program of Bluffton, SC for her dedication and work in the Literacy Program.

Holly reads an hour a week with one or two children during the school year. The special event also involved having each individual club member student, in grade 1- 3, have their own display area in the room. Children presented to parents and volunteers their favorite book and explained how the items in their booth related to their book. Holly exclaims “It was such a beautiful event. I found joy to see children with an improved reading out loud skill, especially for those that previously may have struggled.”

9-11 COMMEMORATIVE CEREMONY, BLUFFTON SC

Post 205 and Auxiliary members attended the 23rd annual commemorative ceremony held at the Bluffton Memorial on Wednesday, September 11 at 8:30am. The Honorable Mayor Larry Toomer was the Master of Ceremonies. The ceremony was led in prayer by Chaplain Paul Hamilton followed by a musical tribute of God Bless America and Amazing Grace performed by Pipe Sergeant Lawrence Kennel, presentation of colors by the Honor Guard of the JROTC from Bluffton High School and musical tribute of America the Beautiful and All is Well with My Soul by the Cross Schools choir.

A NIGHT OF CAMARADERIE AND FUN: SAVANNAH BANANAS OUTING

A group of 32 American Legion and Auxiliary 205 members attended a fun, entertaining Savannah Bananas home game on August 22.

PALMETTO GIRLS STATE PROGRAM 2024

Palmetto Girls State is a summer program for female students who will be entering their senior year next year. This year’s program was held on the campus of Presbyterian College from June 9-15. The program is designed to introduce students to government and citizenship as they participate in mock activities at the municipal, county, and state government levels. 

Congratulations to our delegates: Alexis Kline, Anne Lemire, Brooke Dalton, Caroline Thomas, Carolyn Reeves, Casssie Griswold, Genesis Cabrera, Janeal Stevens, Kiyah Jefferson, Leah Gerald, Mary Thurlow, Michaela Torres,and Mia Taylor who enjoyed their experience and will continue to be dedicated leaders and participants in our Bluffton community.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 205

On Monday, May 27, the Mayor of Bluffton, Honorable Mayor Larry Toomer was guest speaker at the annual Memorial Day services sponsored by the American Legion Dennis J. Becker Post 205. Auxiliary Unit 205 Vice President Deb Scampoli participated in the wreath presentation. The ceremony was a tribute to all branches of the armed forces. Sun City News Media coverage.

American Legion Auxiliary Post 205 Donates to MCAS

Operation Wipe Out is part of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 205 Community Outreach Programs to assist the American Legion Post with helping military families at Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) and the Training Depot at Parris Island in Beaufort.  Our donation of $100 is only the beginning!  If you would like to learn more about how you can help our efforts and support the MCAS, please contact: Dave Robbins at www.alpost205.org

CONGRATULATIONS XAVIER TOLLES: 2024 BOYS/GORLS CLUB ALA YOUTH OF THE YEAR!

April 9, 2024 – Xavier Tolles was named the Boys/Girls Club “Youth of the Year”. The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 205 proudly awarded Xavier with a check and a plaque to honor his meritorious achievements. Xavier is a senior at Cross High School, Bluffton and plans to continue his studies in mechanical engineering at the University of South Carolina.  Xavier has been a member of the Boys/Girls Club since he was six years old.  He has been a leader in their programs and has risen to become a junior staff member. Xavier has followed the Boys/Girls Club credo, “Dream it Today….Do it Tomorrow” and has demonstrated resilience and commitment to excellence. We look forward to Xavier’s continued success.
