Our leadership team and members are committed volunteers. In addition to supporting the efforts of the American Legion Post 205, we are always seeking additional ways to raise funds to assist so many deserving families and individuals in our local community.
Below are some of the many programs that our Auxiliary Unit 205 members support.
Poppy Program
Connecting the visual image of the poppy with the sacrifice of service made by our veterans has been an important goal of the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Program since its inception in 1921. On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, millions of red crepe paper poppies are distributed across the country in exchange for donations that go directly to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans in our communities.
Care For Others
Assembling and sending care packages, supporting our local community including but not limited to supporting Open Arms for abused children in Port Royal, seeking assistance for individuals including obtaining a certified service dog for a veteran in Beaufort and working with the American Legion Post 205 efforts to raise funds for the Charleston Fisher House at their annual golf outing.
Bluffton Veteran Memorial Project at Bulkwater Place
In 2019, American Legion Auxiliary 205 proposed and in partnership with Bluffton city officials, successfully completed a memorial dedicated to the armed forces. The efforts included designing and raising funds through a brick drive led by one of our senior officers, Kay Ranta. To donate, please click here.
Female high school students who have completed their junior year are competitively selected and sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary 205 for these programs. Selected candidates learn about the political process by electing officials for all levels of state government and actively running a mock government.
Community Events
Our Unit 205 members recruit local organizations to register to participate in Bluffton’s annual Veteran’s Day Parade and encourage attendance at the Bluffton Memorial Day ceremony. Our members join in commemorating the events of February 3, 1943, when the USAT Dorchester, carrying 4 chaplains and 900 others sank while in a convoy at the annual February 4 Four Chaplains Ceremony.
Scholarships
The American Legion Auxiliary awards fifteen $5000 Scholarships to students across the country and five $2,000 scholarships to Legion Family Members, veterans and spouses of active duty service members or veterans. Locally, American Legion Auxiliary Bluffton Unit 205 offers a $250 award to the Person of the Year at the local Boys/Girls Club.
